Kate Chopin was born on February 8, 1850. As a child, Chopin loved to read. Her father was a very good businessman who came from Ireland, and her mother was a member of the French community in St. Louis. Chopin grew very close to her grandmother and great-grandmother after her father died in 1855. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1868. Her sisters died at a very young age, and her brothers died in their early twenties. Kitty Garesche is the only known close friend of Chopin's, because Chopin was a very independent girl. She was brought up by her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who were all widows and had learned to support themselves. She was married at the age of twenty, and by the age of twenty-eight, she had five boys and two girls. Her husband died just a few years later. She ran her husbands general store and plantation for over a year. Then, she packed up and moved back to St. Louis to stay with her mom, Eliza. Hoping that it would make life easier living with her mother, Eliza died one year later leaving Chopin on her own again. Going through all of these things on her own and being raised by several independent women, she became independent herself. After all of this she started writing her novels and became very successful. She died on August 22, 1904.
